Member states are obliged to reduce the use of plastic bags by 80%

EU On Monday this week the European Union decided that EU member states shall reduce the consumption of plastic bags about 80 % until 2025.

In 2010, every citizen in the European Union used 176 one-way bags. On March 2nd, the 28 member states of the European Union passed a resolution in Brussels that shall reduce the consumption of the environmentally hazardous bags. In order to diminish the average consumption about 80% to 40 bags per person until 2025, nation states can impose taxes on plastic bags or ban them. The adoption does not include bags that can be used several times and extremely thin bags needed to wrap vegetables and fruits.

The law is expected to come into effect in the next few days. However, the German government has not decided yet how to definitely implement the EU Regulation.
